Washington & Lee University's Athletics Director Jan Hathorn and Head Coach Kami Gardner have responded to the controversy surrounding missed disqualification calls at a recent Last Chance Meet. In an email to SwimSwam, they acknowledged the issue and outlined their plans to improve officiating at future events.
The missed disqualification calls, particularly in the women's 200 freestyle relay and men's 200 medley relay for Washington & Lee, and the women's 200 medley relay for Mary Washington, sparked concern. However, Hathorn and Gardner emphasized that the officials were certified and followed established protocols and NCAA rules.
They explained that the meet faced challenges due to limited officiating resources in the area and the lack of dual confirmations for relay exchanges, take-off pads, and high-speed video review. The program is now taking steps to address these issues.
Hathorn assured that Washington & Lee has identified and secured additional officials from outside the immediate area to contract for future home meets. They also plan to only host invitationals of this nature when they can secure advanced technology, ensuring they uphold the high standards of their sport, program, and university.
Despite the controversy, Hathorn and Gardner remain committed to improving and learning from the experience. They invite discussion and encourage readers to share their thoughts in the comments, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in athletic competitions.
