Yamaha MotoGP boss sees Toprak Razgatlioglu signing as a 'circle closing' moment
Yamaha MotoGP boss Paolo Pavesio views the signing of Toprak Razgatlioglu for the 2026 season as a significant turning point for both the brand and the rider. This move marks a 'circle closing' moment, as it brings together Razgatlioglu's talent and Yamaha's expertise in a strategic partnership.
Toprak Razgatlioglu, a three-time World Superbike champion, was a highly sought-after rider during the 2024 rider market. His multi-season deal with Pramac for 2026 was a major coup for the team. Razgatlioglu's potential arrival in MotoGP was first discussed during his World Superbike days with Yamaha in 2023, following testing at Jerez. However, the move didn't materialize due to Yamaha's lack of a satellite team and the need for experience.
Despite initial reservations, Razgatlioglu's determination and timing have paid off. With MotoGP set to switch to Pirelli tyres in 2027, a rubber he's extensively familiar with from World Superbikes, his expertise aligns perfectly with the upcoming regulations. This timing has positioned him well for success in MotoGP.
Paolo Pavesio, in an interview with GPOne, emphasized the strategic benefits of Razgatlioglu's signing. He stated, 'Arriving in MotoGP at his age, and with his sporting maturity, will allow him to handle the pressure.' Pavesio highlighted that Razgatlioglu's World Superbike titles were achieved through challenging circumstances, demonstrating his ability to thrive under pressure.
Pavesio further added, 'I know he understands the complexity of the challenge, just like he’s aware of the realistic goals for 2026, which are geared towards building 2027.' This indicates a well-thought-out strategy for the future, with a focus on both immediate and long-term success.
The signing of Razgatlioglu could be a defining moment for Pavesio, who takes on the role of Yamaha boss. His prior relationship with the Turkish superstar during their time with Yamaha in World Superbikes, including a world title in 2021, has facilitated a smooth transition to MotoGP. Razgatlioglu's experience with Pirelli tyres and Yamaha's switch to a V4 engine position him well to compete for championships.
Pavesio's legacy at the helm of Yamaha will be significantly influenced by any future success. His ability to bring Razgatlioglu to MotoGP is already a major coup, and any subsequent achievements will further solidify his leadership.
