Award-winning rapper Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the hit-and-run death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in north-east London. The incident occurred on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, on October 18, 2025, when Clarke-Samuel's BMW M5 struck Tamang, a university student from Nepal, as he crossed the road. The court heard that Clarke-Samuel was driving at over 60 mph in a 30 mph zone and failed to stop at the scene. CCTV footage revealed a series of reckless driving incidents leading up to the fatal collision, with Clarke-Samuel repeatedly veering onto the wrong side of the road and mounting the kerb. The court also learned that Clarke-Samuel had been drinking alcohol, with his blood alcohol content exceeding the legal limit. Tamang sustained catastrophic injuries and died in hospital two days later. The student's family expressed their devastation, stating that their only child's future had been stolen. The defendant's erratic driving was captured on CCTV, including the moment he hit Tamang. Initially, Clarke-Samuel claimed he feared someone was following him, but no evidence of a pursuit was found. An Uber driver who witnessed the crash called 999, and police traced the car to Clarke-Samuel's home, where it was found with significant damage. Clarke-Samuel's previous convictions include robbery, aggravated vehicle taking, and driving offenses, raising concerns about his fitness to drive. The prosecution emphasized that Clarke-Samuel's decision to drive after drinking led to a fatal accident, and the court's sentence reflects the severity of his actions.
