Elon Musk's Tunnel Vision: A 9-Mile Journey to Tesla's Gigafactory (2026)

Elon Musk's Boring Company is exploring a 9-mile tunnel project from Reno to Tesla's Gigafactory, according to a recent Fortune magazine article. The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) commissioned the study, paying the company $50,000 to assess the feasibility of a new transportation route under the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, which houses Tesla's Gigafactory. The tunnel aims to reduce traffic and accidents on Interstate 80, serving the 22,000 employees who work at the Industrial Center, with 70% residing in nearby cities. Tesla and Panasonic, the two largest companies at the center, have been in discussions with the governor's office about transportation solutions, including a potential commuter rail system. The Boring Company has been attempting to secure support for a tunnel project since at least 2019, aiming to build small, single-lane tunnels for electric vehicles. While the company has already completed four miles of tunnel in Las Vegas and is chauffeuring passengers in Teslas, the study's completion, length, cost, and vehicle types remain undisclosed.
