Get ready to dive into a co-working space that's anything but ordinary! Anomaly's Apex project in London's King's Cross is a breath of fresh air, challenging the typical harsh office environments.
This unique co-working space, nestled within the Tribecca development designed by Bennetts Associates, boasts a welcoming interior that's a far cry from the usual stuffy offices. Anomaly's head of interior design, Lucy Hillyer-Riley, explains their vision: "We wanted to create a space that feels just as inviting and comfortable after it's been lived in as it did on day one."
Upon entering Apex, you're greeted by a one-of-a-kind welcome desk crafted from low-carbon rammed earth in dusty pink, brown, and orangey hues. It's a collaboration with Clayworks, a British natural finishes specialist, and a true showcase of texture and sustainability. Hillyer-Riley shares, "Rammed earth reveals its story through its layers and imperfections. It's a natural, solid form that adds character to the space."
But here's where it gets controversial... Hillyer-Riley's team initially planned to use earthwork from the site excavation, but faced constraints. Despite this, the rammed earth welcome desk stands as a testament to their commitment to creating a space with its own unique identity.
As you explore further, timber-clad stairs lead to a cozy cafe overlooking the canal. The space is dressed in rich, chocolatey brown hues, with Wishbone chairs and marble-topped tables creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Terrazzo grey flooring adds a modern touch, contrasting the wooden panels behind the long coffee counter.
"The palette is designed to embrace the canal frontage and maximize natural light," Hillyer-Riley explains. "It's a soft and tonal space, drawing inspiration from its surroundings."
Other work and meeting areas continue this homely feel. Instead of rigid desks, communal tables offer a more relaxed vibe, paired with chairs upholstered in leather and other soft materials. Hillyer-Riley notes, "Leather adds a sense of comfort and familiarity. It wears in, not out, creating an easy and welcoming atmosphere."
And this is the part most people miss... Texture is key! From the soft seating to the layered materials and generous planting, every element is carefully considered to contrast the existing building's hardness. It's a space designed with comfort and worker wellbeing in mind.
"Overall, Apex is a space that invites you to use, enjoy, and return to time and again," Hillyer-Riley concludes.
